XYZ is an American broadcasting network. Launched on Sept. 18, 2017 (about 6 months following QTV's demise), XYZ is owned and operated by XYZ, LLC, a jointed partnership between Disney-ABC Television Group, Journal Media Group, and Lorimar Television. XYZ is Disney-ABC's second network in which they have a joint partnership (Disney-ABC also has a joint partnership in MyTV with Adelphia Communications).
History
Plans for XYZ were in development shortly before QTV was shut down on April 13, 2017. And with The WB and WBTV merging, Disney-ABC entertained the idea of launching another network into the mix as a possible replacement for former QTV and WBTV affiliates so they wouldn't have to settle for becoming an independent. The first thing they did was to buy out the rights to former QTV shows from Tribune Broadcasting. The second thing they did was that they brought in both Journal Media Group and Lorimar Television run the network. In the end, the network was named XYZ, which is the last 3 letters of the alphabet, a play on ABC being the first three letters of the alphabet. Ironically, XYZ was going to be the new name of ABC Family (now Freeform) years ago, but CBN founder Pat Robertson, who still has The 700 Club air on the channel nixed that idea,
A new Era
Following the conclusion of the 2022-23 television season, as a part of their budget cuts, Disney-ABC announced plans of spinning off both MyTV and XYZ to a separate ownership group, naming it the Buena Vista Television, Inc. Buena Vista later announced that MyTV will be making the move to be a cable network, with the transition being completed on September 18, 2024. Buena Vista also announced that while MyTV will be a cable network, XYZ will continue as is.
Programming
In addition of airing new episodes of former QTV programming, XYZ will also relaunch former ABC Family series produced in-house by ABC Circle Films. XYZ will also air syndicated reruns of programs to complete it's broadcasting day. While XYZ would keep QTV's Saturday morning block, XYZ will also have a Sunday morning block, with it's programming coming from Cookie Jar, a network co-owned by Journal and Lorimar.
