Not to be confused with the real Channel 9 in Cincinnati, which uses the call letters of WCPO-TV and is an ABC affiliate.

WVNJ (channel 9) is the CBS-affiliated television station that serves the Cincinnati, Ohio area. It is owned by Swift Television Group alongside independent station WAOS (channel 31).

WVNJ is the primary station for the Cincinnati Bengals and Cincinnati Reds.

History[]

WVNJ was established by the Crosley Broadcasting Corporation, owners of WVNJ-AM (700 AM), one of the United States' most powerful radio stations. Crosley Broadcasting was a subsidiary of the Crosley Corporation, which became a subsidiary of the Aviation Corporation (later known as Avco) in 1945. After starting experimental broadcasts in 1946 as WX4ES on channel 2 (Now occupied by WOHC), the station began commercial broadcasts on July 3, 1947, making it Cincinnati's first licensed television station. The station's studios were housed with WVNJ-AM and FM in the Crosley Square building, a converted Elks lodge in downtown Cincinnati. On December 30, 2015, RainbowDash72 announced that Krueger Broadcasting traded ABC affiliate WOHC for CBS affiliate WVNJ.

In 2017, Krueger sold the station to CBS Television Stations, due to their bankruptcy, and maintained it's operations until in 2023, when CBS announced that it will no longer be operating the station and would be sold to Swift Television Group.
