WTMI is a TNT affiliate that serves the Madison, WI area. The station broadcasts on Channel 38.
History
WMAD was launched on April 19, 1987, and was an independent. Owned by Madison Broadcasting, WMAD ran children's programming during the day, and old movies and syndication at night. WMAD also aired select games from the University of Wisconsin Badgers. On Oct. 3, 1988, WMAD became an affiliate of Turner Network Television (TNT). WMAD's ratings started to climb, and when TNT started airing Thursday Night NBA, their ratings took off. In 1992, WMAD started their newscast. Madison Broadcasting started losing money in spite of TNT's ratings continuing to climb. As part of their budget cuts, Madison Broadcasting cut the news division. However, it was enough to stop them from losing money, and by 1998, Madison Broadcasting made the tough decision to put the station for sale. Turner Broadcasting System decided to purchase the station, making WMAD an O&O of TNT. After purchase, WMAD changed their call letters to WTMI, and they relaunched the news division. On April 13, 2017, Turner Broadcasting System sold the station and TBS station WTBM to Graham Media Group.
