WPPP is a dual ABC/NBC-affiliated station serving Pikeville, Kentucky. It is owned by Gray Television and operated by Swift Television Group via SSA.
History[]
WPPP began broadcasting on June 20, 1965, as Pikeville's ABC affiliate. It was signed on by Dorphene Television, as the first station in the city (ABN affiliate WELK, which would later launch in 1966, serves nearby Elkhorn City). An 11 p.m. newscast, East Kentucky News Tonight, debuted that evening debuted ten years later in 1975.
The station's morning show, Good Morning East Kentucky (often abbreviated in graphics to GMEK), premiered in 1982 (in honor of the 200th Bald Eagle Day celebrations), airing for two hours from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m.
