WGFJ (branded as The CW 45) is the CW-affiliated television station serving the Raleigh and Durham areas. Owned as the flagship television outlet of Bachmann Communications (owners of the Bachmann CableSystem), it was originally exclusive to Bachmann CableSystem subscribers, but its carriage has since expanded to other cable providers in North Carolina such as Time Warner Cable, Comcast, etc.

As a cable-only service, WGFJ is carried on channel 45 on Bachmann CableSystem, Time Warner Cable, Comcast, etc.

Despite being a cable-only affiliate of The CW, the station is not part of The CW Plus; programming responsibilities for syndicated series and films seen on the channel outside of The CW's network programming hours are instead handled by Bachmann Communications.

History[]

WGFJ began broadcasting on June 5, 1984, about two years before WHKG became the Fox affiliate for the Raleigh and Durham areas. The channel was originally branded as "Super TV 45" (though it was listed in local editions of TV Guide as "45"). The channel originally aired on Bachmann Cablesystem's channel 45, when the cable provider transmitted its cable channels over a dual-coax system. At the time of the channel's sign-on, Super TV 45 broadcast its programming daily from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m., with Cinemax broadcasting over the channel space during the station's downtime. It then transitioned to a 24/7 schedule in the summer of 1991. The station joined The WB as a charter affiliate in 1995.

On January 24, 2006, CBS Corporation and Time Warner announced that they would shut down their respective networks, The WB and UPN that fall. In place of these networks, the two companies would form a new service called The CW Television Network, which would combine the most-watched programs from both UPN and The WB with new series produced specifically for the network. WGFJ became an affiliate of The CW on September 18, 2006.

Programming[]

Syndicated programs on WGFJ currently include Rules of Engagement, The Wendy Williams Show, The Simpsons, That '70s Show, Supermarket Sweep, Friends, Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory. Despite not having to follow the guidelines due to its status as a cable-only channel, the channel also complies with the FCC's E/I guidelines with three hours of compliant educational children's programming on Saturday mornings and afternoons. Over the years, the station has carried various North Carolina area sporting events including baseball, football, and basketball games in North Carolina, to the point that Bachmann Cablesystem launched a regional all-sports network, Bachmann Cable Sports Network on January 7, 2004.
