History[]

KXJA was founded on August 17, 1953. It was originally owned by Television Portland, a company largely owned by industry pioneer Ed Craney; At the outset, the station operated on channel 9 as a primary ABC affiliate, with

KXJA's first home was the second floor of a Pay 'n Save food and drug store in downtown Portland along with. However, the studio soon suffered heavy damages because of a burglary to the grocery store downstairs. The burglars cut a hole in the floor of the studio and used the studio camera cable to climb down and gain access to the grocery store. A few months later, the cable was replaced and the studio was up and running for good.

KXJA left ABC in 1960, and became an independent, where they aired family programming throughout the day and movies throughout the night. In 1967, Television Portland sold the station to Adams Broadcasting. Adams Broadcasting began adding local programming to the schedule. KXJA aired a number of local programs, all of which was produced live in the studio, including shows and commercials. Some of Portland's local shows in the 1950s were The Oldtimer, featuring John Diz, This Afternoon with You, hosted by Darien Carkeet, What's New? hosted by Ed Craney and KXJA the Clown, featuring Wes Haugen, and Shadow Stumpers where viewers called in to identify what object's shadow was on TV. When the Portland Trail Blazers came on the scene in 1970, KXJA became the home of the Portland Trail Blazers, where they remained for 25 years. In 1995, Adams Broadcasting sold the station to Palmer Broadcasting. KXJA missed out on being an affiliate of The WB when KPOR-TV became an affiliate of The WB, so KXJA remained independent. Palmer began upgrading the station and the station began turning a profit for the next 5 years as KXJA became one of the top rated stations in the Northwest in spite of being an independent.  In 2008, Nextstar Broadcasting purchased the station and began to upgrade the station even further. On November 8, 2015, Nexstar Broadcasting sold the station to Madison1996. As part of the sale, KXJA became the WB affiliate for Portland, Oregon.
