KVCC (channel 6) is a television station in Victoria, California, United States, serving as the market's CW affiliate. The station is one of three flagships of locally based Flower Television (alongside NBC affiliate WQE-TV [channel 4] in Ecovale and Horizon affiliate KGAY [channel 11] in San Francisco) and also owns independent station KLGB-TV (channel 35). The station's studios are located on West Herndon Avenue in the Birchwood area of Victoria.
The station is located together with formerly owned radio stations: KVCC-FM & KVCC-AM.
History
Beginnings
The station launched in 1951, as the second station to launch in Victoria. It was founded by the Kattz family, who were owners of KVCC-AM. It took on the role of being a primary NBC affiliate until KVCA launched in 1953. It took on a secondary CBS affiliation, then a primary, but it was moved to KCAV in 1954. It took on a DuMont affiliation then since there was no affiliate at the time, but lost the affiliation due to network operations ending in 1956. It became an independent since there were no other networks who wanted to make an affiliation agreement at the time.
In 1969, the Kattz family decided to turn down the offer of selling the station or affiliating with the Central Television Network, saying that they didn't want to sell the station to a company that would revamp the entire station operations, nor did they want to immediately lose the affiliation to another station. The affiliation went to now Central-owned KVUR-TV (channel 30).
In 1986, there was an announcement of a fifth network that would compete with ABC, NBC, and others. There were rumors that KVCC would affiliate with Fox, but it instead went to KJIB-TV, which signed on in 1971.
The WB affiliation (1995-2006)
In 1995, Warner Bros. Entertainment announced the launch of The WB. The station announced it would become an affiliate of The WB. The affiliation launched on January 11, 1995, when the network started it's operations.
The CW affiliation (2006-2022)
In 2006, CBS Corporation (owner of UPN) and Warner Bros. Entertainment (majority owner of The WB) announced that they would merge the two networks into The CW. The station announced they would become an affiliate of the network. The station became an affiliate on September 18, 2006, when the network launched.
In 2019, the Kattz family announced they would be launching two companies: Flower Television and Waveform Radio, as part of a decision of the family wanting to branch into more markets, and also separate the radio stations to focus on both independently. The station was immediately acquired by the company, with the family still operating KVCC. This move ended the station's locally-owned era after almost 70 years of family ownership. The radio stations are still located in the same building as the television station.
Averted loss of The CW affiliation, and expansion (2022-present)
On January 5, 2022, the Wall Street Journal reported that Paramount Global (formerly CBS Corporation after the remerger of Viacom and CBS) and Warner Bros. Discovery (the merged company of WarnerMedia and Discovery, Inc.) was in talks of a possible sale of The CW to Nexstar Media Group (owner of KCAV). On August 15, Nexstar confirmed it had "entered into a definitive agreement" to acquire a 75% majority share in the network; the remaining 25% would be shared equally between Paramount and WBD. It was completed on October 3.
In the start of 2023, Nexstar announced that it had reached a TV partnership with LIV Golf, which was made by the Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia as a competitor of PGA Golf. Many have been critical of Nexstar for this partnership due to Saudi Arabia's killing of a journalist and their reputation of policies against gay rights and women's rights, saying that this is "blood money". FTVLive reported that CBS is looking to drop their CW affiliations due to this partnership, which would be a huge blow due to the stations being in significant markets. Nexstar is looking for new stations to affiliate with if this is the case.
On February 1, Flower and KVCC made a statement that this partnership is a terrible decision and that airing LIV Golf is "too risky", and that they do not support Saudi Arabia in any case. The station also stated that if they are to be forced to air the golf tournaments, that they would possibly end their affiliation with the network and either become an independent or affiliate with another.
On February 22, KVCC announced that they would not be airing the LIV Golf tournament, and it would air on Nexstar-owned KCAV on a subchannel. This move is similar to the moves made by CBS and Tegna to not air the tournament. There was no further updates about an affiliation switch.
On May 9th, 2023, Flower Television announced that they will be moving their headquarters back to Victoria, CA, as it coincides with the expansion of the studios of their flagship station. The expansion of KVCC, sourced from a news article, "will have an expanded studio and a new news bureau in the downtown area, and also have bigger technical and office space for us and Waveform".
On January 23rd, 2025, the station announced that they would be buying independent station KLGB-TV (channel 35) due to the station owners filing bankruptcy. The sale was completed on February 19th, and KVCC cited that they would be increasing their local programming for the station.
Programming
KVCC clears the entire The CW schedule, but delays One Magnificent Morning to 10am due to morning newscasts. Syndicated programming on KVCC includes Judge Judy, Family Feud, Inside Edition, Entertainment Tonight, and more.
Newscasts
KVCC produces 57 1/2 hours of newscasts on weekdays, and 14 hours of newscasts on weekends. Newscasts are served on weekdays from 5am to noon, 2pm to 5:30pm, and 11pm with the late newscast being repeated at midnight. Weekend newscasts are served from 5am to 10am, and two full hours of 3pm and 6pm.
KVCC has had a notable reputation in the community on how it has handled news and how it has shown exclusive local stories that have mattered most. They also air local sports events during weekends, including the Minor League Baseball team Victoria Royals and college football team's UC Victoria Warriors.
Since the beginning of the news operation, the station always had a late night newscast, originally called Newsline, until it was removed in 1991. The name has since been reused since 2024. Due to the continuous investment as a locally owned station, it has usually ranked between 1st and 3rd depending on newscasts. When the station became a WB affiliate in 1995, the station went through a change in the looks of the station, taking inspiration from the growing tabloid-style while still keeping it traditional. Even as the network merged to become the CW, the station has continued it's local coverage throughout the Victoria area.
Branding
As an independent, the station used the 6 News branding throughout its entire history. When it became a WB affiliate in 1995, it adopted the WB branding into its newscasts, called WB 6 News. They also changed the branding to CW 6 News when it became an affiliate in 2006 before removing references to the network in the newscasts in 2009.
In 2013, as part of a new news director, the station announced big plans amongst change in the station. The whole look was overhauled to a black and white look, and an accent of green; including a new news theme and studio. The new look got mixed reviews throughout the community, but the station still kept it's legacy position as a leader in the area, with no major changes to the newscasts.
In 2024, the station brought back the iconic news theme and 11pm newscast branding, alongside a graphics change, signaling the return to it's iconic legacy.
