History[]
The station first signed on the air on August 12, 1968 as the area's fifth television station. Before KARN's existence, ABC programming in the market was served by KAPP (channel 31), which became a Central affiliate following KARN's launch.
KARN-TV channel 22, based in Paleto Bay, San Andreas, has a rich history that dates back to its founding by Charles Gerald Karn. Mr. Karn, an ambitious entrepreneur and broadcasting enthusiast, relocated from Baltimore to Paleto Bay with the vision of establishing his own television station. With great determination, he embarked on his broadcasting career and successfully launched KARN-TV.
On April 4, 1975, after years of hard work and dedication, Charles Gerald Karn made the decision to divest his beloved station. The Dallas, Texas-based A. H. Belo Corporation, a prominent media company, recognized the potential of KARN-TV and acquired it for a substantial sum of $83 million. This acquisition marked a turning point in the station's history and opened up new opportunities for growth and development.
Under the ownership of Belo Corporation, KARN-TV thrived as an affiliate of the American Broadcasting Company (ABC). It provided the residents of Paleto Bay and the surrounding regions with quality programming, news, and entertainment. The station became a trusted source of information and a cherished part of the community.
However, on September 12, 1989, Belo Corporation decided to sell KARN-TV to the Dweyer Communications Company. The sale transaction amounted to a staggering $173 million, reflecting the station's increased value and success over the years. Dweyer Communications Company, subsequently rebranded as JD Broadcasting Properties in 1995, recognized the immense potential of KARN-TV and the importance of its presence in the San Andreas broadcasting landscape.
Under the ownership of JD Broadcasting Properties, KARN-TV continued to flourish and maintain its status as an essential source of news, entertainment, and community engagement. The station underwent technological advancements and programmatic innovations to keep pace with the evolving media landscape. Throughout the years, KARN-TV remained a reliable ABC affiliate, delivering top-notch content and serving as a platform for local talent and events.
Today, JD Broadcasting Properties continues to own and operate KARN-TV Channel 22. The station remains committed to providing quality programming, delivering the latest news, and serving the community of Paleto Bay and its surrounding areas. With a legacy that spans several decades, KARN-TV has solidified its position as a cherished institution in the broadcasting industry, thanks to the vision of its founder, Charles Gerald Karn, and the dedication of its subsequent owners.
On February 24, 2023, KARN-TV went onto an expansion to its newscasts and rebranded its newscast called "Paleto Bay News Now", to commemorate the station's 55th anniversary. As part of the expansion, KARN added a 4:00pm timeslot, replacing Wheel of Fortune. Wheel moved to the 7:30pm schedule; KARN-TV added a 7:00pm timeslot for KBCY-LD, and a 10:30pm timeslot as well.
