Horizon Television, simply referred as Horizon, and sometimes shorten to HTV, is an American broadcast television network that is the flagship of the Horizon Media division of Horizon, inc.
Headquartered at the Horizon Plaza in New York City, it has major production facilities and operations at the Horizon NY Media Center and the Horizon LA Studio Center in Los Angeles. The network is sometimes referred as the Next Generation Network, and the Futurama Network, based on its modern branding that break the norms of how television networks look and feel, plus its television programs that have premium quality, that targets audiences of Gen-Z and millennials.
History[]
Horizon Television was founded in 2020 by a team of media professionals who saw a need for a network that catered specifically to Gen-Z and millennial audiences. The network was designed to be modern and cutting-edge, with a focus on producing programming that was both entertaining and informative. They also saw the need to have an interactive experience for viewers as well.
Programming[]
Horizon provides 87+1⁄2 hours of regularly scheduled network programming each week. The network provides 22 hours of primetime programming to affiliated stations Monday through Saturday from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and Sunday from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Eastern and Pacific time (7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Sunday in Central/Mountain time).
Horizon provides daytime programming from 9:00am to 4:00pm, including an hour break for local news and syndicated programming in between. Original daytime programming features talk and pop culture show Horizon Live, soap operas Degrassi and So You See.., and game show Only Connect.
Horizon News programming incudes Horizon Mornings (also known as Mornings over the Horizon) from 7:00am to 9:00am, Horizon News Tonight, overnight news program Horizon News Overnight, and the newsmagazine The Line.
Horizon airs late night programming from 11:35pm to 12:35am the next day.
Stations[]
Horizon Television has a number of owned-and-operated stations (O&Os) in major markets throughout the United States, including Horizon New York (WNYH-TV), Horizon Los Angeles (KHLA-TV), and Horizon Boston (WHMA-TV). These stations serve as the primary affiliates for Horizon Television in their respective regions and offer local news and other programming tailored to their communities.
ATSC 3.0[]
In 2022, Horizon Television was one of the first television network in American history to began its transition to ATSC 3.0 in 2022, when it launched its first NextGen TV station in New York. Since then, it has converted all of its O&O stations to ATSC 3.0, and launched new stations with ATSC 3.0 built in. Horizon Television also partnered with other broadcasters, such as Sinclair Broadcast Group, Nexstar Media Group, and E.W. Scripps Company, to form the Spectrum Consortium, which aims to accelerate the deployment and adoption of ATSC 3.0 across the country.
As part of its ATSC 3.0 strategy, Horizon Television also launched Horizon+, a service that offers enhanced features and content for NextGen TV viewers. Horizon+ allows viewers to access interactive features, such as information about the program they are watching, cast and crew members of it, polling, interaction with shows, such as game shows that allow viewers to take part in answering questions, being able to catch up with shows on demand, being able to read and watch news, look at the weather forecast, and more, all within an interface that feels like Horizon’s TV app, even though it is on a regular TV or ATSC 3.0 device.
One of the most popular features of Horizon+ is its Thursday Night Football experience, which showcases the capabilities of ATSC 3.0 for live sports broadcasting. Horizon+ viewers were able to take advantage of Thursday Night Football in 4K resolution with high dynamic range (HDR) and immersive Dolby Atmos sound. They can also choose from multiple camera angles and audio feeds, view real-time game stats and analysis, interact with other fans and experts via social media, and participate in polls and trivia games during the game.
Horizon Television claimed during an announcement that Horizon+ is the ultimate way to watch NextGen TV, as it offers a personalized and engaging viewing experience that leverages the power of ATSC 3.0. According to Horizon Television CEO Herb Scannell, “Horizon+ is more than just a service that sounds like something you'll subscribe to. First of all, it's not. It's free because of that fact that ATSC 3.0 is the future of the antenna. And it is a platform that connects our viewers with our content in new and exciting ways and allows them to receive information related to it, along with the ability to interact with it. 2024[]
In 2024, Horizon introduced an updated version of its brand to place more emphasis on color and glass-like blur elements with rounded corners, with a dynamic range of premium palettes that shifts. The network also went with dark green as its new default brand color. The Horizon logo was also updated with the logotype changing from a custom font and a new one based on Telegraf.
