The Flower Television Company, Inc. (commonly known as Flower Television) is an American privately held television media company headquartered in Victoria, California. It was founded in 2019 with the merge of KVCC (in Victoria, CA) from the Kattz family and WQE-TV (in Ecovale, FO) from the Fletcher family, spinning off Waveform Radio as part of the Kattz family.
Flower is currently the largest owner and operator of Horizon affiliates.
History
Formation
The Flower Television Company was founded in 2019 by Red Kattz and Katherine Fletcher, both owners of KVCC and WQE-TV, as a partnership between the two and wanting to branch out into more markets. Their radio stations were spun off into Waveform Radio, owned by Lilac Kattz, to separate the identities of the two.
In 2020, Flower announced they would be purchasing WRED from Quincy Media in Mendota, IL for 21 million. The sale was completed June 3. In 2021, they also announced they would be purchasing KZTV from Meredith Corporation as part of the deal to sell it's television stations to Gray Television. It was completed on November 17.
In 2022, Flower announced they would be purchasing three stations from Nexstar Media Group (WCPC, KBCT, & WVTS). The sale was completed on August 1, 2022. Flower retained the Central Montana Network affiliation for KBCT. Flower also announced they would not be purchasing any more stations until 2023.
On January 10, 2023, Flower Television announced it would launch a subchannel network called Playtime! and use it on all of it's currently owned stations. The network features cartoons and children shows that are oriented at ages 6 to 12. The network will launch on January 18.
On January 21, Flower announced it would be purchasing two Univision affiliates (WBUV & WUVE). If approved, would mark the first stations owned by Flower that is a Spanish-speaking station. The sale was approved on January 30.
Dispute with Nexstar Media Group, and more purchasing
In the start of 2023, Nexstar, who purchased 75% ownership of The CW, announced that it had reached a TV partnership with LIV Golf, which was made by the Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia as a competitor of PGA Golf. Many have been critical of Nexstar for this partnership due to Saudi Arabia's killing of a journalist and their reputation of policies against gay rights and women's rights, saying that this is "blood money".
On February 1, Flower Television made a statement that this partnership is a terrible decision and that airing LIV Golf is "too risky", and that they do not support Saudi Arabia in any case. The station also stated that if they are to be forced to air the golf tournaments, that they would possibly end their affiliation with the network and either become an independent or affiliate with another.
On February 22, KVCC and WCPC announced that they would not be airing the LIV Golf tournament, and it would broadcast on different subchannels of different stations in the markets.
On March 13th, 2023, Flower announced it would enter an SSA with the owners of KCSG, with services and resources being provided. A week later, on March 20th, Flower announced they would quickly buy Maelstrom Media, formerly owned by Signature Bank before it's collapse. The deal was approved three days later. This gave Flower their first ever market duopoly.
On May 9th, 2023, Flower Television announced that they will be moving their headquarters back to Victoria, CA, as it coincides with the expansion of the studios of their flagship station. The expansion of KVCC, sourced from a news article, "will have an expanded studio and a new news bureau in the downtown area, and also have bigger technical and office space for us and Waveform".
After CBS announced that it would turn all of their CW stations into independent stations, Flower announced it would purchase KFRC from CBS, and enter a JSA/SSA with Rhapsody Broadcasting. The sale was completed on May 17th. Three days later, Flower announced it would merge operations with KGAY in San Francisco, making it their biggest purchase yet. Flower said that this purchase/merger will help to "grow our branding and give the spotlight on breakthrough stories", and that "will help with better plans for the future". The purchase was complete on May 24th.
On June 28th, the station announced that it would launch a new channel called "The Pride Network", which would feature the newscasts from the independent subchannel, and plans to include original content or acquired shows. The network will launch starting August 25th on all of Flower Television's stations, and many more ahead.
In the middle of August, it was announced that MyTV (as part of the spinoff by Disney-ABC to Buena Vista Television, Inc.) would be transitioning into a cable network, and would be completed in August 2024. As part of the deal, the Adelphia Communications Corporation announced that all of it's affiliates would become independents, and other companies have shut down it's stations. Meanwhile, Flower Television signed a deal to affiliate The Pride Network with Adelphia-owned stations before the announcement. Although not part of the original deal, Flower agreed to acquire 2 full stations from Alltel and Lorimar and many licenses to stations by both and Gannett Communications that were shut down. The sale was approved on August 24th, a day before the launch of the network.
On September 7th, Flower announced that it would sell WAIA-TV in Cleveland WQNC in Charlotte to Horizon Television's station division as part of an affiliation agreement. With this, many former MyTV stations will be getting Horizon affiliations as part of an expansion to more markets. The sale is soon to be approved by the FCC, and the affiliations will take place on September 10th.
Exactly a year later, Flower announced it would move some of it's Horizon station's channel numbers to better reach the designated audience. There was no mention if it included the separately-owned stations. The change was approved.
On January 23rd, 2025, the station announced that they would be buying independent stations KGMC (now KLGB-TV, channel 35) & WLGB-TV due to low income from Cocola Broadcasting. The sale was completed on February 19th, and entered a shares agreement with Diamond for WLGB-TV. Three months later, due to the bankruptcy of Bedore Television, Flower announced they would be purchasing BSEE, BJNH/BTVG, and BPCF. The sale was completed on April 12th.
